Apply a Style Sheet

Monday, August 27, 2007
To apply a style sheet to your Expression Web page, make sure that the Manage Style Task Pane is showing.  This will usually be on the right hand side unless you have moved it.  If you do not see it, go to Task Panes - Manage Styles.

Once this is shown , choose Attached Style Sheet. In the dialog box, choose Browse and locate your style sheet.  Double click on this and now it will add the correct code into the <head> of your document.

Adding a Style

Under Tag Properties, you can choose what styles are available to you in the style sheet that you have just attached.

Inserting an Image to Your Webpage

Friday, August 24, 2007
You can easily add an image to your webpage that you created in Expression Web by dragging the image from the folder list on the left hand side to the place in your website.  Your text might become mis-aligned but you can right click on the image, choose Picture Properties.  In the dialog box, choose the Appearance tab.  Now you can chose to align your image to the left or right of the other information on your website.

Using Frontpage

Frontpage will allow this option as well, however it will use the deprecated align attribute:
<img alt="First Data" src="images/first-data-merchant-services.gif" width="144" height="64" align="left" />

In Expression Web it will use styles to align the image:
<img alt="First Data" src="images/first-data-merchant-services.gif" style="width: 144px; height: 64px; float: left" />

Using styles will be better of course, especially if you are striving for a compliant website.

Publishing From Remote Server to Local Computer

Expression Web can copy files from the web server, just like Frontpage did.  Expression Web can copy these files using FTP or Frontpage Server Extensions, just like Frontpage did.  This is extremely helpful if your computer crashes and you need to retrieve the data from the server.

Assuming you have created the website already on your computer, you can easily set up the connection information in the Remote Web Site Properties.  This is where you can use FPSE or FTP, depending on your hosting company.  If you have used Frontpage guestbook, hit counter or any other FPSE components like:
  • Confirmation Field
  • Discussion Form Handler
  • FrontPage created server-side Image Maps
  • Registration Form Handler
  • Save Results Form Handler
  • Scheduled Image
  • Scheduled Include Page Component
  • Search Form
  • WebBot Registration component
  • WebBot Discussion component
  • WebBot Save Results component
  • WebBot Search component
  • WebBot Scheduled Include component
  • FrontPage created server-side Image Maps
  • WebBot Confirmation Field component
  • WebBot Scheduled Image
  • Nested subwebs
  • Lightweight Source Control (document check-in/check-out without Microsoft Visual SourceSafe for Windows)
  • Categories component
  • StyleSheet links to multiple files or Active Server Pages (ASP) files
For more information review: You can choose what files to publish or synchronize the files (this will help if you have multiple users updating files) to publish from the remote server to the local computer.  Synchronizing is supposed to review the data files that Frontpage and Expression Web creates to know what files should be updated.  It is a good idea to always have a backup copy as well, just in case.
